Duane Daryl Beseke was born in Jackson, Minnesota, on July 26, 1935, alongside his twin sister, Lorraine, to Washington Carl and Zola (Shover) Beseke of Alpha, Minnesota.

Duane grew up in Alpha, where he attended grade school before graduating from Jackson High School with the class of 1953. His life was marked by both hardship and perseverance. At an early age, Duane contracted juvenile diabetes and relied on insulin treatment for the remainder of his life, never seeing a successful cure. At the age of seventeen, he also faced the loss of his father.

Following his father’s passing, Duane, along with his mother and siblings, continued maintaining the family farm until he was old enough to manage it on his own. He, his mother, and two sisters farmed the homestead until the late 1970s, when the land was leased to a nearby neighbor. During his years on the farm, Duane raised chickens, ducks, turkeys, hogs, and Black Angus cattle. He also worked for several major food manufacturers in the area, though corporate buy-outs and the challenges of managing his diabetes made those careers short-lived. After the passing of his mother and sisters, Duane retired, sold the family farm, and moved to Sherburn, Minnesota.

While living in Sherburn, Duane’s diabetes gradually became more difficult to manage, eventually leading him to move to a nursing home in Fairmont, where he spent the remainder of his life. Despite the many challenges he faced, Duane maintained a deep appreciation for life. He enjoyed knitting, traveling, and working in the family garden, and he especially loved nature and wildlife.

When he was younger, Duane cherished traveling with his mother and sisters whenever they had the opportunity. Their travels took them throughout much of the Midwest and western United States. In 1974, Duane traveled to Hawaii for Thanksgiving with one of his sisters, a brother and his wife, where they spent a week with his nephew and wife while visiting several of the islands.

One of Duane’s unique gifts was his remarkable memory. He could recall the names and exact birth, death, and marriage dates of family members and friends with uncanny accuracy, something that amazed nearly everyone who knew him. What Duane could be most proud of, however, was his carefree spirit and infectious love of life. Even while living with the heinous disease of diabetes, Duane remained a survivor.

Duane is survived by his niece, Connie (Ronnie) Beckius who were also his caretakers for many years and Cheryl Hunt; nephews, Roger Beseke, Curt Beseke, Rob (Rhonda) Browne, Steve (Diana) Browne, Dan Browne (significant other, Stacey), Greg (Heidi) Browne, and Tom (Dianne) Beseke; sister-in-law, Margaret Walker; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dorman, George, and Arlo; his twin sister, Lorraine Browne; sisters, Ellen Beseke and Arlene Beseke; and infant sister, Caryll Beseke.
